Spirometry (breath test)

What is spirometry?

Spirometry or the measuring of breath is a test to determine the ability and speed of the entrance and exit of air into and out of the the lungs. Using lung volumes and capacities, the function of lungs can be assessed, respiratory diseases can be diagnosed and their their severity can also be estimated.

Which variables are evaluated in spirometry?

In spirometry with the aim of screening for jobs, the following variables are usually evaluated:

The FVC or forced vital capacity is the amount of air that a person can expel out of his lungs after a deep inhalation.

FEV or forced expiratory volume is the amount of air that a person can expel out of his lungs during one exhalation.

FEV1 is part of the forced expiratory volume that has been removed from the lungs in the first second.

FEF25% -75% is the forced expiratory flow over the middle one half of the FVC.

PEF is the peak expiratory flow, ie the maximum expiratory flow when the person exhales with his maximum effort.

At the Poorsina Medical Center, using the spirolab III device manufactured by MIR in Italy, spirometry is done under the supervision of a specialist in occupational medicine.

What are the preparations for test?

Considering the following is essential to increase the accuracy of the test and achieve interpretable and reliable results:

If you have undergone a surgery in the last few months, let us know when you decide to register for the test.

If you have been suffering from respiratory infectious diseases and auditory system issues in the last 4 weeks, please inform the expert who is performing the test.

If you are taking oral medications due to asthma or bronchitis, continue taking the medication according to the usual schedule.

Do not use inhaled medications such as salbutamol every day.

Definitely avoid eating heavy food and smoking from two hours before the test.

On the day of the test, wear a loose and comfortable dress.
